Case Study prepared for: Pepco® An Exelon Company

Pepco-Case-Study-3

Customer: Pepco Holdings
Solution: Waste-to-Energy Incineration

Pepco Holdings, a subsidiary of Exelon, operates multiple subsidiary utilities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States serving nearly 850,000 customers across a service territory stretching 640 square miles.

Program Scope: To support the on-going high volume of wood pole waste Pepco regularly generates, Koppers Recovery designed a logistics program providing weekly service to multiple storeroom locations.  This approach supports the safe disposal of nearly 2500 poles annually.

Disposal Approach: Pepco’s disposed poles contain a preservative treatment which is EPA-approved as a feedstock for waste-to-energy incineration. As a result our program annually diverts thousands of tons of material from local landfills while simultaneously helping generate roughly 1,932,000 kw of electricity for nearby homes and businesses.

Cost Savings: By eliminating the need for using local landfills, which historically impose some of the country’s highest tipping fees, Pepco was able to recognize a savings of over $300,000 in their disposal program.
